But it doesn&#8217;t work that way. Having a model that predicts, classifies, or automates processes does <strong>not guarantee an immediate economic return<\/strong>. And this is where many stumble: how do you know if the effort is really worth it?<\/p>\n<h2>What is ROI and how can it be measured in machine learning?<\/h2>\n<p>ROI, or return on investment, sounds like something financial, serious, even intimidating. But at the end of the day, it&#8217;s still a simple question: <strong>does the project generate more value than it costs?<\/strong> Easy to say, difficult to measure in <a href=\"https:\/\/koukio.net\/en\/machine-learning\/\">machine learning<\/a>, because the benefits are not always direct or immediate.<\/p>\n<p>For example, imagine a system that predicts which customers are most likely to abandon your service. The savings in retention can be enormous&#8230; but how do we translate that into specific dollars? And in what time frame? That&#8217;s where planning and controlled measurement come in.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Define what \u201cvalue\u201d means for your business<\/h3>\n<p>Before touching any data, the first thing to do is to <strong>clarify what we want to measure<\/strong>. Not all Machine Learning projects seek direct revenue. Some seek to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce operating costs (fewer hours of human labor)<\/li>\n<li>Improve customer satisfaction<\/li>\n<li>Prevent fraud or financial losses<\/li>\n<li>Optimize inventory or logistics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each project has its own metric for success, and that must be very clear from the outset. Otherwise, the numbers you come up with later will be confusing, contradictory, and, worst of all, useless.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Choose the right metrics<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s not enough to look only at the accuracy of the model or the precision of the algorithm. Yes, they are important, but <strong>business success is something else<\/strong>. A model needs training, adjustment, testing, and, above all, time to show its impact. Therefore, measuring ROI <strong>too early can lead to false expectations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In general, it is advisable to define a horizon of 3 to 12 months, depending on the project, for the results to be representative.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Calculate ROI in a practical way<\/h3>\n<p>The basic calculation remains the same:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROI = (Net profit \/ Total investment) x 100<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But be careful: \u201cnet profit\u201d is not always money directly in the bank account. It can include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost savings<\/li>\n<li>Reduction in errors<\/li>\n<li>Increase in productivity<\/li>\n<li>Impact on customer satisfaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The trick is to <strong>convert all of that into a common unit<\/strong>, usually euros or dollars, so you can compare it to the investment made: infrastructure costs, licenses, development hours, consulting, etc.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Keep perspective and learn from the data<\/h3>\n<p>Even when measuring ROI correctly, not all projects will yield spectacular results from the outset. And that&#8217;s okay. The important thing is to <strong>learn from each iteration<\/strong>, identify where the model failed or where the data was insufficient.
